Effect of sampling type on branch length. The expected total length of branches subtending only ancient individuals as a function of the maximum attainable sampling time (Ï„ max ). The expected total length (E(B(Q))) is shown for the stepwise and the bouquet sample types depicted in Figure 2. The number of extant individuals is 30 and the number of ancient individuals is 10. The maximum attainable sampling time is varied causing a sample type specific pattern of increase in the expected branch length (see text).
