Sample types. The two sample types considered in the paper. The sampling time of individual i is indicated by Ï„ i and a total of eight individuals constitute the full sample. Of these eight, four constitute a contemporary extant sub-sample (full circles) and four constitute the ancient sub-sample (open circles). In the stepwise sampling scheme the ancient samples are evenly distributed over the maximum length of the sampling interval (Ï„ max ) which corresponds to Ï„8. In contrast, the ancient samples in the bouquet sampling scheme are all taken at the maximum time attainable.
