  1. NulceotieNucleotide diversity (Ï€) and haplotype diversity (dH) were calculated per flyway. Sampling locations within each flyway are coded by the two letter country abbreviation (e.g., GB - Great Britain; NL - Netherlands, etc.) and a two letter locality abbreviation (GBAB - Great Britain, Aberdeen; NLFR - Netherlands, Friesland). Details on coding are given in Additional file 2. Samples sizes per locality within flyways (n) are reported, as well as digital GPS coordinates (latitude, lat. and longitude, long.; negative longitudes indicate westward direction).
  2. 1)land masses are defined as Old World (OW, which is Eurasia) and New World (NW, which is the North-American continent). The Aleutian Islands and Greenland are not assigned to either of these land masses
  3. 2)flyway definitions based on references 2-4
  4. *coordinates are averages of several near-by places, where ducks have been sampled and combined into one sampling locality. Full details for each individual can be found in Additional file 2.
